Peter J. Jimenez, a resident of Perth Amboy since the age of 10, when he arrived from San Sebastian, Puerto Rico, began his 4-year term as City Council member on July 1, 1986 and has been re-elected to four more consecutive terms in 1990,1994,1998, and 2002.  He is the longest serving elected official of Puerto Rican descent in the State of New Jersey.

Council President Jimenez graduated from the Perth Amboy Public Schools and also attended Middlesex County College, where he studied Mechanical Engineering.

He has worked for Chevron, General Dynamics, Carborundum, Thomas & Betts and Owens Illinois. He served as shop steward and union negotiator on many occasions, working with the United Auto Workers, Teamsters, Oil Chemical & Atomic Workers, and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters.   He is an Investigator/Inspector for the New Jersey State Office of Weights and Measures. He is also a member of the Perth Amboy Democratic Organization Committee.

Council President Jimenez is a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, and is one of the founding members of La Asuncion Church. He is a former member of the Ministries of these two institutions, and is currently a member of The Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society.

Council President Jimenez believes that it is crucial that the citizens participate and become personally involved in what is happening in Perth Amboy. The redevelopment of this city is crucial for its survival. Perth Amboy has a long history of being good to its immigrants, which have been the backbone of America.
